Psycho
July 5th 2023 05:25
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Screenplay: Joseph Stefano (based on the novel by Robert Bloch)
Production: USA
Year: 1960
Sub-genre tags: murder mystery, psycho-sexual, Hitchcock
Tagline: No One ... BUT NO ONE ... Will Be Admitted To The Theatre After The Start Of Each Performance Of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.
Logline: A young woman steals a large amount of cash from her employer's client, then encounters a psychologically disturbed young motel proprietor under the domination of his mother.
Core cast: Anthony Perkins (Norman), Janet Leigh (Marion), Vera Miles (Lila), Martin Balsam (Det. Arbogast), John Gavin (Sam)
Memorable moment: The shower scene.
Curious Facts: In the opening scene, Marion Crane is wearing a white bra because Alfred Hitchcock wanted to show her as being "angelic". After she has taken the money, the following scene has her in a black bra because now she has done something wrong and evil. Similarly, before she steals the money, she has a white purse; after she's stolen the money, her purse is black. In order to implicate viewers as fellow voyeurs Alfred Hitchcock used a 50mm lens on his 35mm camera. This gives the closest approximation to the human vision. In the scenes where Norman is spying on Marion this effect is felt.
Intensity levels:
Blood & gore: low
Fear factor and/or frights: medium
Likelihood of bad dreams (disturbing content): low
Horrorphile’s two cents: Psycho laid the blueprint for many a modern horror film, and one can watch it again and again, and still find nuances, both in the narrative and visually, which seem so fresh and inspiring.
